Earlier today, Philadelphia Union’s Head Coach, Jim Curtin, sat down for a press conference ahead of tomorrow’s preseason match with F.C Cincinnati. Among the topics were injuries, Brandan Craig’s rumored loan, what has stood out so far in this preseason. So, let’s dive into some of the key notes from today’s press conference.

What has stood out to Jim so far in the preseason?
I asked Jim what has stood out to him from this preseason compared to last preseason and where the team still needs to improve on moving forward. “The good news is we still have a consistent, experienced group that when clicking is fun to watch.” Curtin said. Jim mentioned U2 player CJ Olney and newcomer Markus Anderson as the injection of youth into this squad that has stood out to him as well. “That competition in pro sports always brings out the best in the team,” he remarked.
He added that any challenge for a young player is to remain consistent during the preseason and develop that into meaningful first team minutes during the regular season, eventually earning the trust of the players and staff.

Julian Carranza still being on the roster
Jim was asked about Julian still being on the roster. “Julian is a player I love to work with on a daily basis and it’s been amazing watching his development in our environment and getting better and better.” He mentioned, “Julian is a pure goal scorer and is top level striker and fits exactly what we are about.” It was noted that Julian led the league in fouls last year, and Curtin said while he won’t be on the roster forever, he looks forward to working with him for however long Julian’s time with the Union is.

Brandan Craig Update
Jose Nunez asked Curtin about the reported loan of Brandan Craig to El Paso Locomotive FC of the USL. “Obviously with Brandan there are still things in the works,” commented Curtin. “Obviously he needs the opportunity to get minutes and games.” Jim added that things didn’t work out in his loan to Austin earlier this year, and with the depth in front of him he needs to get playing time.

Flach and LeFlore Injury Updates
Leon Flach has had surgery for his pectoral injury, Jim indicated, and added that LeFlore is getting ACL surgery for a non-contact injury he sustained in camp.

Those were some major notes from today’s press conference. The Union return to preseason tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. ET at Joe DiMaggio Sports Complex. That game is not open to the public, so there will be no livestream unfortunately. Stay tuned for more Union news as it becomes available from tomorrow’s match.
