The Philadelphia Union’s players may be on a break currently, but the folks in the front office at the Union were busy today doing good works for the local community. For their fourth annual Juneteenth Day of Service, the Union teamed up with executives/staff from team sponsor WSFS Bank and other volunteers to build 20 bicycles to be given to children from the Boys and Girls Club of Chester.

From the Union’s press release, “The initiative sets out to empower youth with a reliable mode of transportation while promoting a safe, fun, healthy lifestyle.”

Phang helps the volunteers assemble bikes

On a sunny, sweltering morning at Union Yards, the participants worked together to assemble the bikes and safety kits that included helmets, knee pads, and elbow pads, and even had some help from Phang. Teamwork indeed makes the dream work, and the bikes were assembled within about an hour.

The children then arrived and were surprised with the bicycles and buddied up with the adults. They were then able to decorate their bikes and helmets with an assortment of stickers. Once they were outfitted with their safety gear, the youths were able to ride around and give the bikes a test drive. Some children were a little less steady on the bicycles, but the adults pitched in by aiding them as needed. Kona Ice was also on site for the children to have some refreshingly cool shaved ice. The day was to then culminate with a group ride around the Union campus- the best part of the day according to some of the staff. On a day they would normally be off, kudos to the volunteers who helped bring some joy to the local children, and give back to the Chester community.
