CHESTER, Pa.— The Philadelphia Union announced two roster moves today as they agreed to a new contract with Alejandro Bedoya, while Mikael Uhre, who was out of contract, has signed with FC Midtjylland in his home country of Denmark.
Bedoya returns

Bedoya, 38, has been with the Union since 2016 and has helped foster a winning culture ever since as team captain, including two Supporters’ Shields and an MLS Cup Final appearance. During the 2025 season, he became the all-time team leader in MLS match appearances, and had one goal and three assists. During his time with the Union, he has scored 25 goals and has 40 assists.
He has been in not only a first team role on the field, but has been involved with the Union’s Player Development and Front Office initiatives. His new contract for will continue this dual player/front office role through 2026. With his business background, which includes a bachelor’s degree from Boston College, completion of Harvard’s Crossover into Business program, and a diverse real estate and investment portfolio.

“Alejandro’s impact on our organization continues to be invaluable, both on and off the field,” said Philadelphia Union Head Coach Bradley Carnell in a press release. “While he remains an important contributor as a player, his leadership and insights in his Player Development and front office roles are especially beneficial. His experience and deep understanding of our system make him a steady presence and trusted mentor for our younger players, while his work behind the scenes continues to strengthen our culture. We’re excited to have Alejandro back as we move into the new season.”
While he may not get the minutes on the field as he once did, Bedoya provides some solid depth with all the competitions looming, and very importantly, great leadership for a squad that has had a lot of changes heading into 2026.
Uhre departs
Meanwhile, another important piece of the Union’s success the last several years has departed for Danish side FC Midtjylland on a 3.5 year deal after his contract ran out. Mikael Uhre, 31, joined the Union in 2022 from Brøndby IF and was integral in the 2022 season that saw the Union make it to the MLS Cup Final, while he had 13 goals and six assists as part of the “three-headed monster” that was Julian Carranza, Daniel Gazdag, and Uhre in that historic season.

Across all competitions with the Union during his tenure, he scored 43 goals and had 28 assists, and is tied for third with Carranza for the team’s all-time goal scoring leaders (all competitions).
“We always keep an eye on Scandinavian profiles that can help develop FC Midtjylland, and Mikael fits very well into what we want. He’s the guarantor of goals, but at least as important is the mindset he comes with; he’s hungry, experienced and used to playing to achieve,” said sporting director Kristian Bach Bak in a press release from Midtjylland.

He leaves the Union with a legacy of being a contributor with his skills, energy, and with his leadership, which his new club appears to value highly. His last goal for the Union was the decisive one in the Union’s 1-0 victory over NYCFC to secure the 2025 Supporters’ Shield—a fitting exclamation point to his time in Philly.
