CHESTER, Pa.—The Philadelphia Union finally announced today the re-acquisition of the team’s all-time assists leader, left back Kai Wagner, from English Championship side Birmingham City in the first move for the club in the summer transfer window.
Wagner will be a designated player. In order to make the transfer happen, the Union acquired the top spot in the waiver order and $100,000 in GAM from Sporting Kansas City for a 2026 international roster spot and the 22nd spot in the waiver order.

He’s been an integral part of this club’s success and has consistently established himself as one of the top left backs in Major League Soccer,” said Jon Scheer, Philadelphia Union Sporting Director in the Union’s press release. “Kai understands what this club represents, what our supporters expect, and the standards we hold ourselves to every day. We’re confident he’ll make an immediate impact this season as we pursue our goals and be an important part of our club’s future.”

News of the move first was broken by Jonathan Tannenwald of the Philadelphia Inquirer and followed up by Tom Bogert of The Athletic on Wednesday afternoon of the veteran left back’s eminent return to to Philadelphia.
The move comes after just over seven months ago when it was announced on January 2nd that Philadelphia had reached an agreement with the English Championship club for an undisclosed amount, later confirmed to be 2.7 million dollars.
On Thursday, Bogert reported that the fee for Wagner’s return to Chester would be under $4 million dollars, and the German defender would occupy a DP roster slot.
While the move could be considered shocking, it hearkens back to a comment made by Sporting Director Jon Scheer, who had mentioned the club’s goals during the upcoming summer window.
“We’ve identified key ingredients that we’re looking for in our additions, in our signings, whether that be leadership, whether that be weapons offset pieces, whether that be a piece to our back line that is left footed to give us versatility in terms of how we build and how we attack,” Scheer said at the time. “I can also say that we feel we need another attacking piece to give us a different look, a different skill set, especially in and around goal to help complement the pieces that we do have.”
Sounds a lot like Kai Wagner’s skills set, doesn’t it, in two of the three areas he mentions along with the leadership he will bring back to the club?
During his time in England, the German defender appeared in 18 matches for Birmingham City, scoring once and registering three assists between all competitions.
During his first stint in Philadelphia, Wagner was a three-time MLS All-Star and two-time MLS Best XI selection, registered eight goals and a club record 63 assists through 204 regular season MLS matches, and helped Philadephia win the 2022 Eastern Conference and two Supporters’ Shields in the process.
His standout 2025 campaign helped lead Philadelphia to its second MLS Supporters’ Shield, as he logged a team-high 2,769 minutes while leading the club in key passes (90), corner kicks (160), and successful crosses (88). He also contributed two goals and 11 assists while helping anchor a defense that allowed an MLS-low 35 goals and recorded 14 clean sheets.
He will now occupy the Union’s other DP slot, alongside Bruno Damiani, which with their current roster profile, fills both the DP slot along with Quinn Sullivan, Olwethu Makhanya, Phillipe Ndinga, and Ezekiel Alladoh occupying the four U-22 slots.
However, that profile can change and there could be moves made such as the various reports of interest for center back Olwethu Makhanya, which would open up a U-22 slot, plus the Union have 4.3 million to work with in GAM for this season, so the club could free up a spot for an attacking forward with a different skills set as Scheer had mentioned.
Bottom line, just because the DP and U-22 slots are currently taken, doesn’t mean Philadelphia are done making moves.
The move, along with stability, will give Philadelphia some depth now with Frankie Westfield most likely returning to right back spot, and Nathan Harriel able to move between outside back and center back, depending on the match. It gives the Union three quality outside backs moving forward. The move will also allow Philippe Ndinga more time to develop with the club.
It will be interesting, what if any, additional moves are to come from Scheer during the remainder of the summer transfer window. But for now, Kai Wagner is back in MLS and back with the Philadelphia Union.
