CHESTER, Pa.— Homegrown defender Neil Pierre, who has made a huge splash with the team since returning from his loan to Lyngby during the first half of the season, has earned a new contract with the Philadelphia Union.

The 19 year old native of Lebanon, Pennsylvania who came up through the Union Academy and Union II has been extended through 2030-2031 season, with an option for 2031-2032. Rejoining the team during the World Cup break, he quickly established himself as a vital piece to the Union’s success in the second half, contributing four goals and shoring up the back line. In the process, he set a new club record for single-season goals by a defender. He recently made his USMNT debut and was ranked 7th in the MLS 22 Under 22, which was released earlier this week. It has been a big month for the young man.

Interim head coach Ryan Richter goes way back with Pierre, and has seen his progress up through the pathway, including with Union II in 2025.

“Yeah, I think the next steps is for him to continue to progress as a player here, and the announcement of the new contract is a show of faith from the club and a show of faith from him and his family and his side that we’re in this together and know that it’s going really positive right now,” Richter said. “So our job is to keep focusing on the day to day and keep focusing on the game to game, and continue his progression as a player, and for the most part, he’s done a really good job of that. And hopefully, some of this security on both sides helps it. That’s where the focus can continue to stay.”

From a two-time GA Cup champion in 2023 and 2024 to the 2025 MLS Next Pro Defender of the Year, Pierre has been a standout up through the pathway.

“Neil is one of the brightest young center backs in our league, and he has consistently made the most of the opportunities he’s earned throughout his development within our club,” said Philadelphia Union Sporting Director Jon Scheer. “His physical profile, ability to defend aggressively in 1v1 situations, and composure and confidence on the ball make him a model fit for both our game model and the demands of the modern game. He has taken significant steps forward this season, and his progression is another example of the pathway we’ve established from our Academy through Union II to the First Team. We’re excited to extend his future with the club and look forward to supporting his continued development and growth.”
