CHESTER, Pa.—With the Union heading on the road for their first of two matches this week, Philadelphia’s first stop on the road trip will be BMO Field on Wednesday against a feisty Toronto FC side this is currently sitting 6th in the MLS Eastern Conference.
“We feel we are taking steps forward as a group. And this is part of, you know, yeah, the joys and the struggles of being a coach,” Union head coach Bradley Carnell said. “You know, you have these moments where everything rolls, and in the month of May last year, you go 11 unbeaten and 13 overall, and you know, now we’re two unbeaten, and now we’re trying to build off of that and gain momentum off of that. So, yeah, the group’s intact, and the group shows a lot of hunger. Everyone’s recovered. Everyone’s looking to go and get some points in Toronto and Columbus.”

One big acquisition for Toronto this season is Josh Sargent, who along with Dániel Sallói, provides a big threat in the attack. Sargent, however, only has one goal and one assist so far, achieved in the same match. Toronto, though, have been on a good run.
“Yeah, I think [Sargent] aerially is a threat, and I think service from wide areas, and I think set pieces and all the bits of it,” Carnell said. “So they’ve gone six unbeaten now, which, you know, they’ve had a back and forth game against Austin, a crazy game against Colorado, you know, and a tie with Cincy, and pick up some points against Columbus. So, you know, they’ve had some good games, some tough games. But again, we put teams in a different type of a game. Let’s see how that one goes.”

The Union did win in Toronto last season 2-1, so could they replicate that? Carnell thinks so. “Last year we were very successful there in a tough stretch as well. So again, we’re excited about the trip. The guys are hungry about going on this trip and getting points and and having the mentality and the drive to get back on track and start something going in a positive direction here.”
In terms of players, Carnell mentioned the status of a few that have been questionable or out lately, and how the team is feeling considering the short rest they will be on. “Physically, I think we’re in an excellent space right now,” he said. “Credit to everyone. They’ve done a really good job, and we’re getting some guys back now. Eddy Davis is getting back every single day a little bit more, and Agustin Anello today joined us, and it looked pretty good. So hopefully these are all going to be options down the line in our quest to get three points on the road here in his next two games.”
Additionally, Carnell mentioned that along with Sal Olivas, fellow striker Stas Korzeniowski has been dealing with an ankle issue, but is trending the right way and could be in contention for being back with the group. With two road games this week, they will definitely need options.
